McClintock Campaign Calls Charlie Brown “Wishy-washy”

State Senator Tom McClintock’s campaign today accused Charlie Brown of trying to be all things to all people by attempting to distance himself from the liberal positions he has taken on offshore drilling, amnesty for illegal aliens and higher taxes.

McClintock’s campaign distributed a direct mail piece to voters over the Labor Day weekend that highlights the positions of the two candidates on important issues such as immigration, taxes, gay marriage and offshore drilling.  The Brown campaign called it “rife with fabrications.”

The Brown campaign denied opposing expanded offshore development, and yet published an energy plan in which Brown specifically rejected opening new tracts, telling politickerca.com: “Brown opposed drilling for oil in areas where it isn’t already allowed, such as off the coasts of many states, including California.”

The Brown campaign denied supporting amnesty for illegal aliens and yet supported federal legislation last year that would have legalized the presence of up to 20 million illegal aliens in the nation and exempt them from the same laws as followed by every legal immigrant.

The Brown campaign denied supporting higher taxes, and yet published a proposal to increase energy taxes by $18 billion – a tax increase that would be passed on to motorists as higher prices at the pump.

The Brown campaign denied that he supported gay marriage but confirmed that he opposes the initiative that restores traditional marriage as the law of California.

“You cannot talk out of both sides of your mouth and expect anybody to trust you,” said McClintock campaign consultant John Feliz.  “Tom McClintock has become an icon in California for steering a steady course no matter what the political winds.  Even those who disagree with him know that they can trust where he stands and can trust that he will stand firm.  The same cannot be said of wishy-washy Charlie Brown “

“Charlie says he’s for offshore drilling, but doesn’t tell you only on existing leases.  Charlie says he opposes tax increases but supports plans that actually raise taxes.  Charlie says he wants to stop illegal immigration, but supported the amnesty bill in Congress.  Charlie says he supports traditional marriage but opposes the initiative to restore traditional marriage. ”

“You cannot portray yourself as a political moderate in the district while holding fundraisers in Beverly Hills and San Francisco with radical leftists like Brad Sherman and Barbara Lee.  You cannot portray yourself as a friend of the military when you appear in uniform to support the burning of an American soldier in effigy,” said Feliz.
